Help! My Heat Pump Never Stops Running in Pontiac, IL
As you run your heat pump more to keep warm in Pontiac, IL, you may notice some things that are off about the system. If the outside temperature isn’t freezing, a heat pump should cycle for 10 to 15 minutes, and you should have two or three cycles an hour. Here are some reasons your heat pump may be running longer than normal.
Clogged Air Filter
If you don’t change the air filter every 90 days or so, the dirt and debris it’s collected will block air circulation, allowing less warm air to go to your rooms. The heat pump will then keep running without reaching your set point.
Any blockage to air circulation can contribute to this. For example, you may have covered over your supply vents with furniture (if it’s a wall vent) or a rug (if it’s a floor vent). Check the rooms in your home to make sure that you’re not blocking the vents.
Leaking Refrigerant Line
Refrigerant is the chemical responsible for transferring heat from the outdoors to the indoors. The pipes can corrode and start to leak, which could lead to less heat coming into your home and longer cycles. With a maintenance agreement, you can prevent things from getting to that level.
The Thermostat Is Too High
Set the thermostat to around 68 degrees. The higher the temperature, the longer the heat pump will run and the more wear and tear it will encounter.
The Heat Pump Is Too Small
The unit may constantly run if it’s too small in comparison to the size of your home. Unfortunately, in this case, it may mean you have to replace the unit to one that’s a more compatible size.
